Nicholas C Nelson presents five must-have lawn care tips that are also environmentally friendly.

Nicholas C Nelson is the owner of Guaranteed Pest Control & Fertilization, Inc. He and his team are experts in helping Floridians maintain perfect lawns without harming the environment. Nelson recently offered his top five environmentally-friendly lawn care tips.

“Floridians love a well-groomed lawn,” Nelson said. “Unfortunately, that often comes at the expense of the environment via the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers. These five lawn care tips will help Floridians grow their dream lawns without causing harm.”

Fertilize Correctly

An environmentally-friendly lawn doesn’t mean Floridians have to avoid fertilizer. However, unabsorbed fertilizer can be especially harmful, as it can enter rivers, streams, lakes, and oceans via water runoff.

Nicholas C Nelson emphasizes the importance of using organic fertilizers and applying them correctly. He suggested fertilizing just once a year and using the right amount of fertilizer based on soil test results.

Limiting Pesticides

Floridians can reduce the use of pesticides in numerous ways, such as the use of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). This form of pest control involves habitat manipulation and other techniques to reduce pests without chemicals.

The goal is to get to the root of the problem rather than waiting to exterminate pests once they arrive. IPM reduces the pesticides that can run off into waterways, which eventually lead to larger bodies of water.

Water Properly

A deep root system is critical for creating and maintaining a healthy lawn. Watering a lawn too often encourages shallow roots. Nicholas C Nelson emphasized the importance of watering the yard for long periods of time but less frequently. This style of watering encourages the roots to grow longer and more robust.

Nelson stated the importance of watering Florida lawns early in the morning before 10 a.m. Watering later in the day in the Florida heat can cause water loss due to evaporation.

Focus on Mowing the Right Way

Many Floridians assume it’s time to mow when the lawn grows unsightly tall. However, experts like Nelson offer many tips for mowing the right way, such as not cutting the lawn too low. He suggested cutting off one-third or less of the grass blade’s length.

Nelson also recommended keeping mower blades sharp and high. Keeping a taller cutting height creates a deeper root system and stronger, healthier grass.

Incorporate Native Plants

Nelson explained that Florida is home to an abundance of beautiful native plants. Native plants naturally thrive in the area without pesticides or fertilizers and help restore natural habitats. They also require less water than outside species. Creating a native plant portion of the lawn can be aesthetically pleasing and encourage healthy growth in other areas.

Nicholas C Nelson and Lawn Care

Nelson and his team at Guaranteed Pest Control & Fertilization are Florida locals who understand what lawns throughout the Parkland area need to stay strong and healthy. They’re eager to help other Floridians create the yards of their dreams without harming local wildlife and waterways.
